Jim’s Journey to Redefining Plus-Size Fashion

While attending FIDM, Jim came across a powerful article by Tim Gunn—renowned designer, educator, and Emmy-winning co-host of Project Runway.

The article, "Tim Gunn: Designers Refuse to Make Clothes to Fit American Women. It’s a Disgrace," exposed a harsh reality: most designers stopped at a size 12, leaving countless women without stylish, well-fitting options.

(This was in 2016, and while progress has been made, there’s still work to do.)

That’s when it hit him—the average American woman is a size 16-18, yet only a handful of brands truly catered to them.

Memories from childhood came rushing back—being called fat, teased for his clothes, struggling to find anything that fit. And when he did? It never fit well. Clothes weren’t a source of joy—they were a source of frustration.

But then, he discovered Fashion.

Fashion had the power to transform—to let you express who you are without saying a word. Yet, for plus sizes, the options were scarce.

Fueled by passion (and yes, livid about the lack of choices for curvy women), Jim and his family set out on a mission—to create L I V D, a plus-size fashion house that celebrates curves, confidence, and individuality.

From everyday essentials to statement pieces retailers never realized their customers craved, L I V D is here to change the game—one beautifully designed piece at a time.
